The idea of a common ‘brotherhood’ of Christians is a thing often referred to in passing words by the Apostle Peter and other New Testament authors.
We see pop culture refer to how ‘bros’ are to treat other ‘bros’ but we ought to follow the example of Christ who willingly calls us His brothers (Heb 2:17-18).
I am very glad to be part of a church where I can proudly call several members my ‘bros’, and I certainly don’t wish this phrase to merely mean, “Another guy who I get along well with.”
To be a bro means to recognise the common unity of Christ through whom we are adopted into the Kingdom of God - such that we endeavour to care for one another in all things that the evil of this world casts upon us. We are to love one another with brotherly love, whether it be in rebuke or exhortation.
A brotherhood should go deeper than external superficialities but be marked by a desire to refine one another like iron that sharpens iron (Prv 27:17). Of this, I am blessed to have and of this, I encourage you to do also.
